Along with improving the health and wellness of our community, we believe in improving the experience of health care. One way we strive to do that is through our Teddy Bear Clinic, a free event where children learn that there’s nothing to be scared of when it comes to getting the medical attention they need. Children are invited to take their teddy bears – or to borrow one that we’ll have available – to undergo “screenings” and “procedures” from medical professionals. The teddy bears will show the children that everything will be more than just fine. Save the date -> 9-11am, Sept. 30, at Anderson Institute of Technology, 315 Pearman Dairy Road. Lots of fun educational activities and photo opportunities will be part of the action. https://fb.me/e/4zUKuo5kA

Happy birthday to Raven, a very good girl who turns 5 years old today! Born in the Netherlands, she is a Dutch shepherd who works with our security team to protect our patients and everyone at AnMed. When her handler, security officer Steve, gets dressed in the morning, Raven does tight circles to get ready herself. Steve calls that Raven’s happy dance.

John O’Leary’s amazing story has inspired people around the world, so the AnMed Foundation is presenting a special opportunity for it to inspire people in South Carolina. The author of the best-selling book “On Fire” will speak at “Anderson On Fire,” an event sponsored by the AnMed Foundation, 3:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday at Second Chance Church, at 3233 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Get your tickets here: https://lnkd.in/gbHPZa76 “When I was a 9-year-old boy, I was burned on 100% of my body,” John O’Leary said. “I was in my garage playing with matches and gasoline — just like I had seen the older boys on my block do. A fire exploded, consuming my garage, sending me flying back against the wall and turning my whole world upside down. “I woke up in a hospital bed where doctors had given me a 1% chance to live. Through all the pain, I remember hearing my mom’s voice and asking her if I would be OK. My mom had the courage not to comfort me with a lie but to instead ask, ‘John, do you want to die? It’s your choice, not mine.’ I thought for a moment and answered: ‘Mom, I don’t want to die. I want to live.’”

Believe it or not, as a not-for-profit health care organization, we don’t mind if our community members visit us less, or if they spend less money through us. Preventative health care is a wonderful way for people to improve themselves physically and mentally, even emotionally and financially, and it doesn’t take extensive training or hardcore diets to make a big impact. If our neighbors put it into practice, perhaps our time together will be more limited, but it will be no less valuable. And they’ll be happier for it. Here are 5 reasons preventative health care should not wait – plus 10 easy ways to make it happen: https://lnkd.in/gu3z3cAh

Congratulations to two Stars of the Month at AnMed, Joie and Mary Jo! Mary Jo, who works at AnMed Primary Care, took time out of her busy day to listen to and encourage a patient she had called for scheduling. The patient seemed to be crying uncontrollably. The patient said her life was crumbling down around her and indicated that she was severely depressed. A coworker heard this call and heard Mary Jo use her mental health training and nurturing manner to spend 45 minutes with the patient. She let the patient talk about the things bothering her, and she asked the patient about options for help. Mary Jo offered to contact a social worker on behalf of the patient, and she offered to reach out to a local counseling center. Eventually she was able to schedule the patient with a new primary care provider to provide difference-making care. Joie, who works at AnMed Home Health, went above and beyond for a COPD patient recently. She had arrived to start an admission visit for a man when she realized he was quite anxious and having breathing difficulties. Joie immediately assessed him and got him to start breathing exercises that calmed him down. He did not have a lot of family support, so Joie talked with him to help him understand his barriers and provide information to help him improve. She also realized he had inhalers at a local pharmacy and limited food supply, so she picked up his medications as well as some lunch and helped him on his journey to better health. If you’re interested in joining the stars on our outstanding team, visit anmed.org/careers.
